StatementPaola Favoino’s artistic process focuses on the search for a symbiosis that crosses the concepts of identity, surface and stratification, anchoring itself to socially current issues in relation to individuality, social and migratory flows and their ambivalences. Intermediality is an intrinsic part of her artistic method in which the fusion of different techniques and materials is aimed at bringing out the images that are hidden beneath the evident surface of things. The artist uses photography and the art of darkroom printing as the main tools of investigation in an act of printing itself that makes contact with the history investigated and explored as in a fractal geometry of evidence. Sociology, the artist’s first academic training, permeates her research according to a practice of the shadow understood both as the role of the sociologist who makes society happen and records it, and at the same time as a place from which to observe and bring out its latent images. The center of tension becomes the visual investigation of the images themselves, through layers and grains that penetrate the limit between intimate substance and its social restitution.
